In 1941, as war raged across the ocean, a select group of Ford Motor Company employees traveled to San Diego to tour the Consolidated Aircraft Company factory. Plans were already underway for the Ford Motor Company's own aircraft factory. The first work done on the Willow Run site was the construction of the airfield.
